Instructions for members submitting independent paper proposals:
Fill in the SALSA 2013 Individual Paper / Poster / Film Proposal form, save it with your full name as the document title [Last name.First name], and attach it to an email to be sent to SALSA.Nashville2013@gmail.com. Please write: “Paper Proposal - <participant’s last name, first name>” in the subject line (e.g. Subject: Paper Proposal – Castro, Elena). The deadline for paper proposal submissions is November 15.
The Program Chair will organize accepted independent papers into thematic panels, or assign them to an appropriate organized panel that has an opening.
Instructions for members submitting paper proposals in a panel or workshop:
Prepare your proposal on the individual paper proposal form, and send this to the organizer of your workshop or panel. The organizer will submit the completed set of session proposals.
Instructions for panel organizers:
Panels will be 2 hours, with six time slots of 20 minutes each. Each panel will have a minimum of 4 papers (maximum 6); organizers may invite discussants and allocate time for discussion and introduction. Each panel should have a chair, who will enforce time limits on presentations.
Proposals for a thematic panel should include an abstract for the session prepared by the organizer, including paper abstracts from at least three authors. If the organizer of a thematic panel wishes to solicit papers to form a panel, the organizer should submit an abstract for the session to the Program Chair by October 7; if approved, the Program Chair will circulate this abstract to the membership in a list of panels or workshops that are seeking participants.
Panel organizers should compile the SALSA 2013 Individual Paper / Poster / Film Proposal forms of the participants in their panel, and attach these, along with the Workshop/Panel Proposal form listing presenters, discussants and the panel chair, to an email to be sent to SALSA.Nashville2013@gmail.com. Please write: “Panel Proposal - <organizer’s last name, first name>” in the subject line (e.g. Subject: Panel Proposal – Gonçalves, Marco). The completed workshop proposal is due November 15.
Open slots in panels may be filled with a volunteered paper assigned by the Program Chair.
Instructions for workshop organizers:
A workshop is a focused discussion of a topic defined by the organizer, with papers submitted in advance (deadline: February 15, 2013). The workshop organizer will invite paper presenters and other participants; participation is limited to those invited, unless the organizer wishes to invite others or open the session to general attendance. If organizers wish to solicit papers for the workshop, they should submit the preliminary workshop proposal to the Program Chair by October 7; with his approval, this will be circulated to the membership, who may communicate their interest to the workshop organizer.
Workshop sessions will be 2 hours, or two sessions of 2 hours each. The workshop organizer(s) will define the structure and procedures for discussion. It is the organizers’ responsibility to enforce the February 15 deadline (or set another deadline) to receive papers and circulate these in advance to the workshop participants. A paper author who fails to meet the deadline will be dropped from the session. Workshop organizers will define procedures appropriate to the session’s objective; but the requirement for pre-circulation of completed drafts is essential to the workshop format. To submit a workshop proposal, the organizer should compile the SALSA 2013 Individual Paper / Poster / Film Proposal forms of the participants and attach these, along with the SALSA 2013 Workshop / Panel Proposal Form listing presenters, discussants or other participants, to an email to be sent to SALSA.Nashville2013@gmail.com. Please write: “Workshop Proposal - <organizer’s last name, first name>” in the subject line (e.g. Subject: Workshop Proposal – Smith, Jane). The completed workshop proposal is due November 15.
Instructions for members submitting film proposals:
Members volunteering a film to be screened during the conference should fill in the SALSA 2013 Individual Paper / Poster / Film Proposal form, save it with their full name as the document title [Last name.First name], and attach it to an email to be sent to SALSA.Nashville2013@gmail.com. Please write: “Film Proposal - <participant’s last name, first name>” in the subject line (e.g. Subject: Film Proposal – Garcia, Mariela). The deadline for such submissions is November 15.
In the abstract section of the form, include a brief statement explaining the film’s theme, and its length in minutes. A small theatre for film viewing is available, and meeting rooms are equipped with computers (usually both PC and Mac), internet, projector and screen; please note in your email if you have other technical requirements.
Instructions for poster proposal submissions (open to non-member students and professional members):
Posters will be presented in a central area of the conference venue on Saturday, March 9. Students at all levels may present a poster; SALSA membership is not required, but poster presenters must register and pay the student registration fee.
To submit a poster proposal, fill in the SALSA 2013 Individual Paper / Poster / Film Proposal form, save it with your full name as the document title [Last name.First name], and attach it to an email to be sent to SALSA.Nashville2013@gmail.com. Please write: “Poster Proposal - <participant’s last name, first name>” in the subject line (e.g. Subject: Poster Proposal – Jimenez, Fernando). For guidelines on creating a poster, see: http://www.aaanet.org/meetings/upload/how-to-create-anthropology-posters.pdf. Posters may be cut-and-pasted on cardboard, or printed. Poster proposals are due November 15. However, to encourage promising students’ engagement in Amazonian scholarship, additional poster proposals will be considered until February 1, 2013, if accompanied by a note of endorsement from an instructor or mentor who is a Professional Member of SALSA.
